Guide 04
Moving from another app
Garden imports directly from seven other budgeting apps. Categories and accounts come across, not only transactions — a migration that loses your category tree is not a migration, it is a CSV paste.
Supported
| YNAB | Budget → Export, the nYNAB CSV export |
|---|
| Monarch | Settings → Data → Download transactions |
|---|
| Copilot | Settings → Export data |
|---|
| Mint | The archived transactions CSV, if you kept one |
|---|
| Actual | Export from the file menu |
|---|
| Lunch Money | Settings → Export |
|---|
| Tiller | The Google Sheets export |
|---|
Drop the file in the same way as a bank statement. Garden recognises which app produced it — you do not have to tell it.
What comes across
- Every transaction, with its date, amount, merchant and notes
- Your categories, including the structure, mapped onto Garden's category model
- Your accounts, with their names and types
- Whatever the source app recorded about clearing or reconciliation status
What does not
worse than no budget. Set these up fresh; it takes minutes.
cancelling your old subscription.
- Budgets and goals. Every app models these differently and a wrong budget is
- Attachments and receipts.
- Anything the source app did not put in its export. Check the export before
Before you cancel anything
Import, then spend twenty minutes checking. Look at your net worth, look at a month you remember well, and look at the category totals for last year. If they match what your old app said, you are done. If they do not, tell us rather than fixing it by hand — that is a bug in our importer and someone else will hit it too.
Keep the export file. It costs nothing and it is your fallback.
If your app is not listed
Most apps can export a plain CSV, which Garden reads. You will lose the category mapping and have to recategorise, which the rules engine makes fast. Tell us which app and it becomes a candidate — each importer is a single file, so adding one is cheap.
